Policies and Procedures

A World of Children is open from 6:30am to 6:00pm, Monday-Friday.

  • Your child must be picked up by 6:00pm. For every minute after 6:00pm that a child remains at the center a $1.00 per minute charge will incur. In the event that a child is left at the school past 6:15pm, the school will try to get in touch with the emergency contacts. If a child is left at the school past 6:30pm and none of the emergency contacts have been reached, the proper authorities will be contacted
  •  We have two locations to serve you.
    • 3478 Holland Road, Virginia Beach, VA, 757-468-0452
    • 752 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA, 757-436-6967
  • Our school is closed 10 days out of the year for holidays. If any of these holidays occur during the week, a full week’s tuition must be paid. These holidays include:
    • President’s Day
    • Memorial Day
    • July 4th
    • Labor Day
    • Thanksgiving and the day after
    • Christmas Eve and Christmas Day
    • New Years Eve and New Years Day
  • Tuition is due Monday of each week without exception.  A $25.00 late fee will be charged if payment is not made on Monday. Unfortunately, we cannot make any deductions for a child’s absence, including the 10 holidays observed by the school. (See contract for vacation and sick credits)
  • In case of emergency, each child must have a change of clothing left at the school. All items of clothing must be marked with the child’s name on it. The school cannot be responsible for unmarked clothing
  • Parents must bring their child into the building and see that the child is under supervision before leaving the premises
  • A list of persons authorized to pick up your child must be left on file at the school. We reserve the right to refuse the child to all unauthorized persons
  • The State Board of Health requires immunization documentation prior to your child’s admission to the school. Each child must have a physical examination by or under the direction of a physician, prior to or within one month after, admission.
  • Any child arriving at the school with obvious signs of a communicable disease, will not be permitted to attend school that day. If a child becomes sick during the course of the day with a fever of 101.5`, arrangements must be made for the child to leave school as soon as possible.
  • Each child enrolled in the school is entitled to a 1 – 2 hour nap. Please supply a twin size top sheet or two small blankets for your child. Linens must be taken home every Friday, laundered and brought back Monday morning of the following week.
  • Your child will have the opportunity to play outside for at least one hour per day, weather permitting
  • Each child is assigned a “cubby-hole” to store their personal belongings (coat, change of clothing, blankets, etc.). We ask that the children refrain from bringing toys to school except on Fridays for “Show-n-Tell”
  • A hot, nutritious lunch is served each day along with 2 snacks. Menus will be posted weekly on the parent bulletin board. Parents are encouraged to review them in advance. Children should not bring food to school. Food exceptions will be made in the case of allergies or for religious reasons.
  • MEDICATION: All children get sick; however, please do not bring your child to school until they have passed the “contagious” stage. If your child arrives at our school with a contagious illness he/she will be asked to leave. Due to state regulations and company policies, we are not permitted to administer over the counter or prescription medication. The only exceptions we are permitted to make will be for behavior modification, life sustaining prescription medication (Albuterol, Ritalin, Metadate, etc.) or diaper ointment. Other medications, sunscreen, bug spray, etc., can be administered or applied prior to arriving to school. If an antibiotic is necessary, your physician will prescribe a 12-hour medication if asked to do so. This way your child will not miss their afternoon dose while attending school. If your child requires life sustaining or behavior modification medication or diaper cream during the day, please see the director when your child arrives. A medication authorization form must be filled out and signed by the parent. Written authorization from the child’s physician must accompany any long-term prescription drug. Medication must be stored in its orginial container. All medication will be stored in a locked cabinet or box. Medication can only be stored for 10 days and then must be returned to the parents or discarded. The medicine itself must have the following information listed on it:
    • Child’s name
    • Date
    • Name of medication and dosage requirements
  • DISCIPLINE: Our goal at A World of Children is to help your child become an independent, self assured and socially adjusted individual. In order to achieve this goal, we must set basic guidelines, rules and regulations. While learning to play, share and communicate with others, your child will also be learning what is and is not acceptable behavior in the classroom. Listed below are the courses of action will be taken in disciplining a child:
  • The child will be removed from the play group by the teacher to avoid embarrassment. The teacher will then stress that this course of action is unacceptable and direct the child toward a more positive situation
  • If the child chooses to take the same course of action again, they will be sent to “time out”. “Time out” consists of a chair away from the play group. We have found “time out” to be a very effective form of discipline, coupled with positive reinforcement. We continually praise the children for their appropriate behavior, encouraging them to act in a positive rather than a negative manner
  • If the child continues to misbehave, a conference with the parents may be necessary. At no time will a child ever experience any kind of physical discipline; however, we are required by law to report any suspected abuse or neglect
  • SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN ARRIVING FROM PUBLIC SCHOOL: To avoid concern and confusion, please contact us if  your child will not be attending our school for the day. If your child is expected to arrive at the center after public school hours via public school transportation, we will meet and escort your child into the school. If your child does not arrive as expected, we will notify the school making sure that the child did not miss the bus. If your child does miss the bus, arrangements will be made for your child to be transported to A World of Children.
  • ADMINISTRATION
  • DIRECTOR: The director oversees the entire school and is also in charge of implementing the school program. All concerns, complaints, suggestions and of course compliments should be discussed with the school director
  • ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: If the director of the school is unavailable, the assistant director will be available to anyone needing assistance.
